When to ask about umbrella coverage
Start with losses your household would struggle to absorb. An umbrella policy may add liability protection beyond qualifying underlying policies. This is educational preparation for a licensed-agent review.
What an umbrella may do
It may add liability coverage above the limits of qualifying underlying auto and home policies. It does not replace property coverage, and it does not necessarily include UM/UIM.

Ask about a $1 million umbrella quote as an illustrative discussion option where available. That is a conversation starter, not a universal recommendation or a promise of availability or sufficient coverage. Compare the actual quoted price.
Questions to ask
- Which underlying liability limits must I keep?
- Which people and which property are covered?
- Which activities are covered or excluded?
- Are defense costs inside or outside the limit?
- What exclusions apply, and is UM/UIM included?
Expensive coverage is not automatically better. Compare the actual quoted price against what your household can sustain.
